PAVING THE PATH OF INNOVATION

InnoTech Alberta, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alberta Innovates, provides applied research services to clients large and small in diverse sectors, using advanced technology. From generating new ideas to testing, de-risking and scaling-up technology, InnoTech is focused on productive commercial applications and end-uses that help grow, fuel and build Alberta’s economy.

ENGINEERING NEW BUILDING MATERIALS

InnoTech scientists work closely with industry partners to test technologies to create high-demand engineered building materials, such as particleboard, medium-density fibreboard (MDF) and laminated timber, using new ingredients like wheat or rice straw, as well as different woods such as aspen, pine, fir, or even exotics like eucalyptus. Another focus is the development of chemical additives to create more fire- and water-resistant building products.

REDUCING WEAR AND TEAR ON OIL SANDS EQUIPMENT

Oil sands producers need to count on their plant equipment to operate without fail in an aggressive operating environment that includes abrasive sands and corrosive chemicals. Working with industry partners, InnoTech developed a new coating made from chromium carbide powder, an extremely hard ceramic compound that when fused with metal surfaces, improves the wear resistance and strength of metal, even at high temperatures, prolonging equipment life and increasing productivity.

CANNABIS LEGALIZATION GROWS OPPORTUNITY

The InnoTech team has provided long-standing support for Canada’s hemp industry, including testing of new varieties, hemp processing research and development of innovative products from hemp seed and fibre.

InnoTech was the exclusive provider of bioanalytical testing to Canada’s first legal producer and distributor of medical marijuana. Today, the Bioanalytical Laboratory in Vegreville is licensed by the federal government to test both industrial hemp and marijuana. And, with cannabis legalization, InnoTech’s expertise is in steady demand by regulators, processors and growers across the country.

FERMENTATION TANK BREWS BIG BUSINESS

InnoTech is home to the largest fermentation tank in public ownership in North America. Companies across Canada and the world use the facility to optimize and scale-up biological processes, involved in making products that include biopesticides and soil inoculants for the agriculture sector, as well as probiotics for the health and food processing industries, among others.

When companies approach InnoTech for assistance, they’ve usually created a process that works at “bench-scale.” The challenge is that scaling up a fermentation process isn’t as simple as doubling a recipe. InnoTech’s facility uses flexible transfer lines that can be rearranged, allowing them to connect any tank to any other in the facility. That means clients can find the absolute best configuration to conduct a process, rather than having to fit a process to the plant. The facility is often fully booked, and is in continuous operation aside from breaks required for essential maintenance.
